Nakhoda Masjid- Kolkata

Nakhoda Masjid is the largest mosque in Kolkata. The Nakhoda Mosque was originally built by Haji Zakariah or Zakaria, who was a Cutchi Memon merchant and business tycoon. The Cutchi Memons, also known as ‘Nakhodas’ or seafarers, began to trade in East and South-East Asian countries like Burma, Java, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Mauritius in the early 1730s. They reportedly came to Kolkata in 1849 for the ease of their business, since it was a major port city during the early days of the British Empire in India.
